This is called a "book." It's an amazingly short one. Ms Pope's book "Dragon Rose" - yet another retelling of Beauty and the Beast - goes to location 3441. This book goes to 1652, and that's with the addition of the "extra" story, which should be part of the "book" itself. I purchased this book because I've read two other books by Ms Pope, also fairy tale retellings, and enjoyed them enough - but I did expect a book, not just a story.

Let me also address some comments made that criticize the lack of sexiness. So what? If you want porn, buy porn. Goodness knows, there is enough porn-like "romance" available to go around. Frankly, I like the fact that Pope does not intersperse every few pages with graphic sex scenes.

One issue I have with the book is Ms. Pope's writing style, which is pleasant enough, and lacks many of the grammar/punctuation/spelling issues of other current writers--but it *appears* the author is rather stuck in first person narrative. Also, at least with the other two books I've read, there's more of a setup to the main body of the story, which is not the case with this quickie.

Another issue is Ms. Pope's continual use of fairy tales upon which to base her stories. Admittedly, many stories carry with them the characteristics of fairy tales. That being said, most authors don't make a career out of rewriting stories.

My last issue is with the rather startling similarities between this story and the story "Beauty" by Tanith Lee. Lee's story, which has a length of 768 (by how Kindle app measures length) is part of her book "Red As Blood," a very unique set of retellings of fairy tales. Pope *appears* to borrow rather significantly from Lee's retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story - set in the future, humans with mysterious aliens that no one has seen (and are beautiful once beheld), soulmates between the species, etc. Since Lee's writing has always been a favorite of mine, I find this similarity disturbing.

Pope is at her best doing fantasy or sci fi (the latter in this case) retellings of fairy tales. This one in plot outline closely follows Beauty and the Beast as other reviewers have noted. However, the motivations of the B&B characters have never been clear in any versions. Pope uses that ambiguity to construct an endearing and mysterious race of people out of which she has obviously developed several more novels. But this first one about the Zhore may well take the cake.
I had read A simple Gift first, and liked it so much I wanted to see how Sarzhin and Anika met. Breath of Live a bit like Beauty and the Beast. Set on a Coloney world whos ownership is in dispute between the human and Zhore. The Zhore being a race that not much is know about. They ware hoods to mask their faces and keep much to themselves. So while the dispute is being settled they are sharing the planet. Anika and Sarzhin are neighbors and after a mishap involving Anika's father on Sarzhin's property she goes to live with him in restitution, not as as some sort of sex slave but as a simple companion. Anika is uneasy with her new living arrangemets, Sarzhin is a nice guy, if a bit excentric.Some how this unlikely pair find love.
I love the beauty and the beast story so I am always ready to give a retelling or new version ago, this one has a human girl as beauty and an alien as the beast, good twist, something new which i like.

So there is Anika Jespers, she's a homesteader’s daughter on a Gaian colony, thinks she’s destined for a dull existence on her family’s farm. But when her father makes an impossible bargain with their neighbor, one of the alien Zhore, she faces a future different from anything she could have possibly imagined. So she goes to live with the beast which she labels him because he is always wearing his cloak and hood and because the Zhore race is very secretive and no one has seen one, but is he beastly, you will have to read to find out, their relationship grows slowly over time, good retelling which keeps close to original as can. If you love the beauty and the beast story then i recommend this to you.
This story was so engaging, I became completely involved with the characters and could not put the book down until I finished. Told in first person, it reminded me of my favorite Victoria Holt books, with the main female being intelligent, beautiful (but doesn't know it), isolated, unwanted, lonely, who meets a man that is an outcast and unsocial, and usually wealthy. And of course, the outcome is always a happy one.

Contributing to the moodiness of the book is a very real sense of isolation due to it taking place on a basically airless planet which is mostly devoid of sunlight and has continuous storms.

I only wish that the story could have been longer; my second wish would be that I could find more books as well written and compelling as this one.
This is a pretty standard-issue retelling of "Beauty and the Beast," but with an SF twist. The strongest element of the book was the characterization of Anika and Sarzhin, who somehow stuck with me after I'd finished the story and made me want to read it again. It's a quick read, which is good and bad, as I would've liked to continue in the story's world awhile longer. Anika's spunky, down-to-earth voice (no pun intended), made her a fun narrator. And Sarzhin's reasons for his actions were a clever twist on the usual Beast's curse.

The writing is very good, and the setting well-rendered and vivid. I could feel the dreary, claustrophobic conditions of Lathvin and Anika's homestead, contrasting with the beauty of Sarzhin's greenhouse. The only reason I'm giving this book three stars is that the plot sticks so close to the fairy tale. But don't let that turn you off, because the sweet love story and engaging characters more than make up for it. If you like this book, also read Christine Pope's "Dragon Rose."
