A friend suggested I try The Hollows series years ago. I was reluctant primarily because I was still in my Janet Evanovich phase (which ultimately burned out around the mid-teens in her Stephanie Plum series) and I had a stash of other books to cycle through ahead of this one. I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it, even though I'm not one to fancy fantasy fiction. I usually like standard mysteries, but the sprinkles of magic and lore in a parallel reality to humankind make this very entertaining and Kim Harrison's style of writing, dialogue and use of language when describing details and action is excellent. The protagonist, Rachel Morgan, is a redheaded, temperamental witch/huntress (former agent for the folklore realm of law enforcement), who, beleaguered and disgruntled with her day job, decides to quit and start out on her own. She's primarily partnered by Ivy, a sultry vampire, and a pugnacious pixie named Jenks. There is a host of other equally intriguing characters; a mix of heroes and villains, though at times it's hard to distinguish who is who. I'll continue on with the series, and as long as the writing is up to par with the first book, ideally I'll finish them all. However, I'm left with a single unresolved issue with the first book: What in all Hollows did Ivy wish for? Unless I missed it, I don't believe the author reveals it in the first book. I'll be utterly peeved if I find after reading through the next few that it was a hook with no bait (meaning they mention she gets the wish, uses it, but neglects to ever reveal what it was). Otherwise, I'm eager to see how the other characters evolve, and what trouble they can get into.

There's too many reviews about the story. Let me tell you my angle.

I read the original when it came out, but it was damaged in "The Flood" where it molded and rotted away. (sniff!) So now I purchased the digital.

I am flummoxed how someone could screw something up so simple? Did someone retype the entire story without proofing it? Lots of words missing. Lots of mistypes present. (Talk about a liberal use of brackets because it was close to the DELETE key!) Lots of misspellings... I swear, I was thinking I was reading the wrong book. I mean, the hardcover version was virtually perfect!! The edition looked so amateurish, I thought I was reading an indie version without help from an editor!!! KIM!!! Are you proofing these? This book made you look... stupid. I'm sorry, but it did. If I were you, I wouldn't have allowed it to run until all the errors had been corrected. Stop slouching and get to work! If I were your editor, I'd be embarrassed as hell.

I would have given this book a 5+ star rating, but the lack of proofing brought it down. I don't think it deserved more than a minus-1 star, but I only hope I don't see this again in the next book. Please don't disappoint me!
This is a snappy, humorous and surprisingly intense urban fantasy. As a general rule, I'm not crazy about witches and magic, as they seem to be an easy out a lot of the time, but in this story, magic is laboriously constructed and not fail-safe by any means.

The story has an engagingly inept heroine with huge potential, a great cast of supporting characters in her posse, including the tough, sexy, kick-ass heroine you'd expect to be on the cover of the book as its lead. The villain is multi-faceted, the boyfriend material is quirky and overall, the character development is great. No one is really who they seem on the surface, which offers a lot of meat to the overall read.

I took off one star simply because the author does hammer in a few plot elements and scenes with a heavy hand, but its excellent and when I finished, I promptly bought the next book. ) Then I thought about it a little more...and added the star back because it really deserves more than a four.
They say third's the charm. After two previous failed attempts at audio books I have finally found a narrator I can and will try again. She was very diverse with her character's voices, stayed at the same pace with the narration and narrated this amazing story.

Rachel is a witch runner on the IRS (Inderlander Runner Services) that is fed up with the crappy jobs she's getting lately. She decides to quit the IRS, even though no one voluntarily leaves unless they can pay their contract off so as not to have a price on their head.

What she doesn't count on is that her friend Ivy wants out too and because she is the best runner the IRS have and she is pulling out to start a business with Rachel, plus she's able to pay her contract, the IRS puts a price on Rachel's head (even when Rachel quitting is what the head of the department wanted).

I loved every second of this book and I love Janx(?) the pixie. He is just a cutie and hilarious. The things that Rachel went thru. This is true fantasy. The author knows she has no bounds with her creation and she took full advantage of it. There are no rules, no guidelines to follow and I think what is in store for these characters is more excitement and I can't wait to see what comes next.

The books is written in such a way that even though it gives you closure it leaves you with some questions and speculations of what comes next. Like a good TV episode.
Kim Harrison writes such a descriptive story one can visualize while reading. The story takes place in and around Cincinnati (where humans live) and The Hollows where vampires, witches, pickles, faries and all other non-humans lived. The Federal Inderlander Bureau (F.I.B.) which are humans & who replaced all local police departments and to monitor non-humans & to get all banned technology & drugs off the streets. The Inderlander Service (I.S.) who are not human monitor non-humans and try to get the mind altering drug Brimstone off the street. Rachel Morgan quits the I.S. & her vampire friend Ivy to quit also. A price is put on head Rachel's head & it is non-stop page turner from there. I have bought all of this series and going to enjoy them all.
