THE STORY: Abby Radwell is a psychic talent with a sensitivity to books. She is thrust into danger when the laboratory notebook regarding powerful gems is up for auction. Someone wants her expertise and is willing to kill for it. In seeking help, she ends up hiring Sam Coppersmith. Sam has his own agenda: his family also wants the lab notebook to keep it from falling into dangerous hands. A specialist in paranormal crystals and amber, Sam comes to help Abby but soon begins to think that there is something more than danger between himself and Abby.

OPINION: This is a new twist on Krentz's paranormal romances. These book seem to exist in the same world as her Arcane series with many of the same principles, but these characters are not tied into the paranormal the way the characters in the Arcane books are. Unfortunately, this book lacks the energy and excitement and remarkable characters that occupy Krentz's Arcane world. Neither the characters nor the storyline are particularly remarkable.

The book is well written and is certainly a good one time read. However, it lacks the elements of vivid and memorable characters and situations that make a book a re-read for me.

WORTH MENTIONING: A descendant of the Coppersmiths is the hero of the Jayne Castle futuristic paranormal SIREN'S CALL.

FINAL DECISION: This book felt average without anything to really push it into the great category.

CONNECTED BOOKS: COPPER BEACH is the first book of the Dark Legacy series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

I have always enjoyed Jayne Krentz paranormal books and this one is no exception. This story is about Abby Radwell, a woman with very strong talents for unlocking encrypted books. It is also about Sam Coppersmith, also someone with extremely strong paranormal talents. Abby seeks Sam out to help her find whoever is trying to blackmail her into locating and unlocking an encrypted book containing secret lab experiments.

I really liked Abby and Sam as a couple. Ms. Krentz was able to make their relationship very believable. She was also able to make the idea of paranormal talents and the use of paranormal energy seem just as believable. Who knows, people such as Abby and Sam may very well exist, I like to think so.
Interesting girl meets very slightly scary guy, overcomes the nasty; HEA. I liked her historical novels much better than the contemporary ones because the characters are more dimentional and the storyline is more robust. That said, this is a pleasant series and a fun read.
I love this author; she delivers in that the characters from past novels are brought forward and expanded upon during her story. I love a good series where I can sink my teeth into it and just escape from life for awhile and relax in her story.....

She consistently delivers a good read for me when I need to escape from life. I love the concept of the paranormal.

This series continues on where the other older series have left off. I love that a high tech lab which is on an island off the coast of Seattle or thereabouts can exist with high technology. I love the high tech world that they introduce along with the concept of the forbidden catacombs that lie beneath the surface that the aliens have forged.

This is JAK doing what she does best---delivering strong characters, suspense,and romance.... with some humor and a hefty dose of paranormal thrown in. It follows the same pattern many of her books do, but the characters are their own people with their own personality traits, strengths and weaknesses, character flaws and redeeming qualities. If you like her other books, you'll probably like this one, too.
Jayne Ann Krentz begins a new contemporary/paranormal/romantic suspense series with Copper Beach. The main characters are Abby Radwell and Sam Coppersmith. Abby works as a dealer in the rare paranormal book market because she has the unique talent of being able to unlock encrypted books. Unfortunately, her family is far more likely to think that she is crazy than to celebrate her talent. In fact, they sent her to a special boarding school in her youth to "cure" her. She made lifelong friends among the other students with paranormal talents and developed a distance from her family. She also became very self-reliant and confident in her skills. She has also become very reluctant to trust anyone outside of her small circle.

When Abby begins to be blackmailed, she is directed to Sam Coppersmith. Sam is the son of the head of Coppersmith Inc which made its fortune in the rare earths business. He also has paranormal skills. He takes one look at Abby and falls in love. Naturally, he is determined to solve her problem and along the way solve his too. His girlfriend was murdered by someone trying to break into his home lab and his family is searching for a lab book that contains experiments on some dangerous crystals that his father and his partners discovered years ago. Sam is a typical Krentz hero. He is attractive, single-minded and very, very competent. He is also dangerous.

This story was a fast-paced thriller as Abby and Sam try to track down the person (or people) who want the encrypted lab book and who are willing to kidnap Abby and kill anyone who gets in their way. The dynamic between the two of them as they slowly find their way to romance was very engaging. I loved Abby's reluctance to trust and her constant effort to keep the relationship between them a business one. I also liked Sam's desire to protect Abby and his need to get her to see their relationship the way he sees it.

This was an excellent romantic suspense title filled with fascinating characters. I was really fond of Abby's dog - Newton - who was, as Sam says, a condo-sized junkyard dog. I recommend this one to JAK's many fans and for fans of the paranormal in their romantic suspense.
