Murder in Chinatown A Gaslight Mystery Victoria Thompson Books
Thompson`s book is a look behind the scenes of New York`s Chinatown to an aspect little know to westerners. Part of the story is about family life in a mixed-race family of the 1890s. This is of some importance to me as my wife is not of western descent. Where I live, mixed raced families are still a curiosity. I can only imagine what it was like in the 1890s in the US. Thompson`s book sheds some light on that subject which is still on the forefront of today`s social conscience. Now to the main theme. No matter how hard she tries, Sarah can`t avoid getting involved with certain amounts of unpleasantness, much to Frank Malloy`s dismay. This story is no different. A young Chinese-American girl disappears and Sarah does her best to find her and enlists Malloy`s help in doing so. As luck would have it, they find the girl only to have her later found dead. The investigation has several suspects both within her family and outside of it, so it makes for an interesting investigation. The conclusion is both alarming but at the same time, rewarding.
I encourage everyone to read this book and I think they will enjoy it as much as I did.

Murder in Chinatown A Gaslight Mystery Victoria Thompson Books Reviews
I can now see why this series is so popular. It has a good mystery, wonderful characters, and an insight into the setting of the story. In this one, Sarah is drawn into the murder of the niece of one of her patients in Chinatown. I enjoyed the way the author teased out the clues bit by bit. The description of the tenement buildings and their occupants' way of life was not the basic mainstream knowledge I had of Chinatown nor NYC in the 19th century. It was very fascinating. Frank was very busy in this one, so there was a lot of action. I highly recommend this series!
I really enjoyed this book in the Gaslight series. I was amazed to learn the harsh discrimination the Chinese endured in New York. In book 7, the hatred between the Irish and the Italians were covered. In this book, I was fascinated to learn that many Irish girls married Chinese men, and everyone hated the Chinese. The mystery line was well thought out and so were the characters. This was most definitely another good read from Ms. Thompson.
The reason it took 2 day is because I had to stop and recharge my iTouch. Now that I read with the type product I don't know if I'd really like to go back to books. I really love Victoria Thompson's books. I have read most of them. I think I only have two more and then I will have read all of her Gaslight Series books. I can't wait for her next book to be released.
I feel like Ms. Thompson does her research and I get to learn a lot about life back in that era. During that period of time, things were so different and the neighborhoods were so segregated by nationality. You also learn about the customs of the different nationalities with these books.
I really like these books.
This series fascinated me from the very first story. The characters are believable to the time period and the rich historical nuggets about New York City in the 1890's (a character in its own right) is strewn throughout the story without being a history dump. The relationship between Sarah and Frank is a slow burn and just as interesting as the mystery itself. I am eagerly awaiting the latest in the series---May can't come soon enough! If you are a fan of history, a good mystery with a sideline of romance, then Victoria Thompson is the author for you.
Another great mystery novel set in early 20th century New York, this time in Chinatown. A young newlywed mixed-race girl has been murdered. Was it her family, his family, or someone else? The relationship between Sarah Brandt and Frank Malloy progresses. The author deftly evokes the sights, sounds, smells and attitude of those days. Recommended.
Hoping that the Dr. Brandt murder gets wrapped up soon as I am getting very intrigued. Took me much longer to figure out the killer this time in comparison to the early part of the series. Enjoying the character development a nice slow build and growth that seems realistic. Chinese immigration stuff was super interesting, learned some neat tidbits
This is the ninth book in the engaging and enjoyable Gaslight Mystery series of books by this author. Set against a backdrop of turn of the twentieth century New York City life that encompasses the teeming tenements of the poor and the stately homes of the wealthy, these books are replete with period detail that is often fascinating. They chronicle the investigatory adventures of Sarah Brandt, a former socialite turned midwife, and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy of the New York City Police Department. As these books are part of a series, it is strongly recommended that they be read in the order in which they were written.
When Sarah Brandt is called to Chinatown to deliver a baby, she encounters Irish women who have married Chinese men. In reading the book, I had not realized that, for a time, Chinese women were not allowed to immigrate here. Consequently, what were the men to do, if they were interested in having families but did not wish to return to China? This book answers that question, and the answer is also is a natural segue to the mystery at hand.
When fifteen year old Angel Lee, who is biracial, goes missing, everyone knows that it is fruitless to report it to the police, as bigotry is rampant in New York City. Sarah, however, feels differently, and she enlists the aid of Detective Sergeant Malloy in investigating Angel's whereabouts. When Angel eventually turns up dead in an alley, things may not be as they seem.
The main characters are well-developed, and the dialogue is credible, moving the story along at a brisk pace. With each book, the backdrop stories of the lives of the main characters are fleshed out just a little more. At the core of it all is the evolving relationship between Sarah and Malloy, a relationship that is constrained by the social mores of the time. While the mysteries are intriguing, they are the framework around which the characters evolve. Those who like historical fiction and mysteries will enjoy this well-written series of books.
