This skillfully written, both beautiful and sick, increasingly demented story of alcohol drenched insanity is amazingly a debut novel. The unpredictable story races along peppered with colourful foul mouthed rage and eloquently humourous turns of phrase. I loved it.
What a wonderful book! I tripped over this and bought it on impulse to take on holiday on my . I read it in a day! I just couldn't put it down. On the face of it, it looks like a fairly ordinary book about a man losing the plot and finding solace in a remote bar after the killing of his wife and child. But every time you think you've got the hang of what's going on another surprise twist is thrown at you. Fair to say a couple of the twists are not too surprising, certainly if you've seen any of the films of M Night Shamaylman, but the final turns will make you want to re-read the book immediately. I did, and enjoyed it even more second time with more understanding.
Delirium Tremens left me quite breathless. I was expecting a fairly run of the mill adventure/revenge yarn, and although that's how it seems to start out it twists and bucks under you like a wild bull on speed! Just hold on as it will be a fun ride. After the murder of his family Jake finds refuge in a bar full of life's losers in some forgotten town in Antigua. Compelled to carry out some `jobs' for a shadowy character called Uri, he comes to realise the full horror of what has happened. Even if you grew up on Hitchcock films full of twists, this one will still pull the rug out from under you at the end!
I read this book in two sittings. the descriptions of characters and places were so vivid i was totally sucked in from the beginning . The story moved swiftly from Poland to Antigua and from Malmo to Dublin keeping me on my toes throughout . A story brilliantly told with a dramatic unexpected and thrilling ending .If you are looking for a tense page turner this is the book for you .
