Punny very punny, as I have come to expect from Piers Anthony, in the Xanth series of books. I had read the first 2 books right after they were published. There weren't that many in the series then. I will be getting the rest of the series as I can. Just because they are written by him. I will also look into some of his other books as well.
To anyone who has a love of word play you will enjoy the Xanth series, although I had to look up some words to fully get the pun, and I thought that I was well read.

I do wish they'd been edited a little better, but it does not detract from the lovely fantastical stories. I have been rereading this series to decide if my sixth grader is ready to read it. This is my favorite in the series, and a good place for him to start, even though it will be out of order.
All of the Xanth series is great. Adult enough but not too adult so I can read some of it with the kid, and really good play on words. Ive read them over and over.
I've read all of Piers Anthony's books and love them. I bought this book to read to my 6th grade students. I love the puns and the play on words that my students need to be exposed to this kind of word play. The only problem is the book is geared more for high school kids and has some mild sexual references where the male characters react like teenagers to meeting attractive women. I skip these parts.
Pros
-The book is exciting, a great read, especially for fans of the series. It's full of suspense and emotional moments.

Cons
-Dor isn't a very compelling character, and I found myself missing Bink. The entire story.
-Several parts seem like a cop-out. I won't ruin the story for new readers.
-I saw the end coming from half the book away, which also seemed cop-out-y. It seems like Piers wanted to wrap up absolutely all conflict, found the task challenging, but struggled through it anyway, causing really rough moments, like with the second one, and an even more abrasive ending that left me saying 'ouch'.
-The trend for peculiar names continues, with names like Smash, Roogna, and Horsejaw. (Horsejaw isn't a horse)
I love Piers Anthony books. This book is one of many in this set. He makes you use your imagination a lot through the whole book. He takes the simplest thing and turns it into something else. This book is so much fun to read. I read this book every chance I got. I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen. I would recommend to anyone whole loves to throw themselves into the fantasy world.
Castle Roogna is a mind trip that is full of idioms wrapped in puns, which are enveloped in irony. Piers Anthony is one of the greatest writers of all time in that he is educating younger readers while entertaining older ones. I realize that the primary demagraphic he is shooting for is teenage boys but his style is so delicious that EVERYONE can enjoy his books.
What sets this one apart from the first two Xanth novels is the fact that he is teaching important life lessons here(Ones that some of us may have forgotten but need to relearn). For instance, Dor learns not to judge by appearances but by actions. This may sound simplistic but Anthony presents it in such a way that it is entertaining. And the reasoning behind the goblin\harpy war has disturbing resonance to many modern conflicts. In other words, he is writing about more than a magic land and his story has much deeper meaning.
But what makes this a must read is his expert storytelling and style. I love Hemingway and Kafka and theres nothing like Thomas Mann, but when I want to relax and be entertained there is no better author than Piers Anthony and his Xanth novels. Cheers! (melodorous entertainment or foul play?) LOL!!!
I read this series years ago. I'm one who likes to read books over and over, so I ordered the first three books of the series for my KIndle. Piers Anthony is quite a writer. In the "Xanth" series, he is the king of "pun". This particular book of the series centers on Bink's son, Dor. Dor is beginning to grow up and needs a "mission". So between King Trent and Magician Murphy, they come up with the idea to send Dor into a tapestry hanging in Castle Roogna to find out the history of the castle. Inadvertantly, a spider happens to be in the wrong place at the right time, and it ends up as Dor's companion in a more "primative" time of Xanth. It is a fun read, with lots of interesting experiences for the immature Dor. I really liked this episode. We get an opportunity to meet several characters that we have met in earlier books of the series. I won't give any more away. This is a fun book to read, gives lots of history, and insight into the personalities of familiar characters. It is also fun to see Dor's responses to the realization that he needs to mature a bit more to experience aspects of adulthood. That sounds cryptic, I know; read the book and you'll understand what I mean.
